What Is Your Favorite Korean Cuisine?

Food represents not only the country but also the culture and custom of its people. Before you came to Korea, the first thing that pops into your mind is “what if Korean food is not suitable for my taste?” Here are some recommendations from KDI school students.

What’s the must-eat Korean food you go for when you visit Korea?

– Dak-Galbi (stir-fried spicy chicken)

It’s fresh and delicious, and don’t forget to have fried rice after you finish eating it! (Bisan Abuatia,  2020 MDP) dak-Galbi is just really tasty — you should try it. I already feel so hungry when I think about dak-Galbi (Javokhirjon Abdukholikov, 2020 MPP). Not only dak-Galbi but also jjimdak is amazing and tastes super good, I think they really represent Korean food well and every international student must try them (Castro Sánchez, Alda Cecilia. 2020 MPP ).

– Shabu Shabu (meat and vegetable hotpot)
It uses beef, which almost anyone can eat, and the taste is simple and not so spicy. Also, foreign visitors can really feel the Korean atmosphere by experiencing the food (Uktam, 2019 MPM ).

– Dak-kalguksu (chicken noodle soup)

Do you remember the feeling you got when you are having a nice warm meal made by your mom or your loved one? Yeah, exactly that is the feeling you get when you try dak-kalguksu every time. I guess it tastes like home. Whenever you get homesick, or want to feel your family love, or just want something that would make your tummy happy, do not hesitate to get a bowl. The best part of this soup is its hand-made noodles! (Sofia Medina,  2020 MDP)

– Bulgogi (marinated beef)
It’s well prepared. It has various food components that summarize the entire Korean food culture (John West lntimalei, MPM 2020). It’s very similar to my hometown food, and it reminds me of my country (Paul Michel, PhD. 2018). you can taste the tenderness of the meat and the beef is not overly sweet. In addition, the unique sauce taste is difficult to find elsewhere outside Korea (Emilda Zulkeflee, MPP 2020). Korean barbeque and any Korean seafood — it’s just so delicious!(Mariano de Deus, 2019 MPM)

– Korean fried chicken
it’s so lucky me that there is a chimaek restaurant that provides halal Korean chicken. I eat it about once a week (Abdul Aziz,  2019 MPM).

– Samgyetang (chicken soup)
I’m sure most people are more familiar with bulgogi or jjigae, but I recommend samgyetang as it is a simple yet nutritious and delicious meal! (Md Hambali, Hanis Haziqah, 2020 MPM)

– Tteokbokki (rice cakes in a spicy sauce)
Grilled tteokbokki. We normally eat steamed or baked rice cake back at home — I had never tried it grilled and it was surprisingly nice.(Joyce Aguirre, 2020 MPM). Since you can find it easier on the street, and if you like spicy food, you should try it (Archita Nur Fitrian,  2020 MDP).

– Bibimbap (rice topped with mixed vegetables)

It’s a Korean rice bowl topped with vegetables, spicy gochujang (hot pepper paste), and an egg. It’s one of the most well-known Korean dishes, and once you try it, you’ll love it (Lamia Elaagib, 2020 MPM). Bibimbap and mixed seafood. It’s nutritious and makes me healthy (Khadija Abdullahi JImale,  2020 MPP). Dolsot Bibimbap (stone hotpot mixed rice) is also really good. It’s a healthy balanced meal that well reflects Korean culture. The dish has been around since at least the 16th century. It is also a top 50 world dish (according to a 2011 survey). The best part is if you’re vegetarian you can have the dish without meat (Ronald Tebogo Keikotlhaile, 2020 MPP).

– Galbitang (beef short rib soup)

It is good for the whole season since it is a nutrient-rich food (ginseng, pine nuts and jujube), which will boost energy. When I first arrived in Korea in the spring, it was quite cool. This is the first Korean food that I ate. Later on, I had it quite often, especially during exam week. Second, it is popular food — you can find it almost everywhere! However, the one near our school is the best (Chheum Sotheana, 2020 MPP).

– Kimchi Jjigae (kimchi stew)
If you arrive during the cold season, try a steaming pot of kimchi jjigae. For me, kimchi jjigae is the ultimate comfort dish on cold days! Kimchi, when stewed with all the other ingredients, releases so much flavor. Also, the spiciness of the gochugaru (hot pepper powder) warms you up and gives you energy (Mădălina Socaciu, 2020 MDP). It brings a Maldivian vibe to me when I especially miss my hometown. Mackerel is one of my favourite fish. It’s like Korean Maldivian fusion food: godeungeo gui (a mackerel dish) (Aishath Samaha, 2020 MDP).

– Naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles)
On hot summer days, definitely naengmyeon. For me, kimchi jjigae is the ultimate comfort dish during cold days!. As for naengmyeon, cold noodles with the fresh radish and cucumber and ice will definitely make you turn off your air conditioner  (Mădălina Socaciu, 2020 MDP)

– Ramyeon (instant noodles)
You can taste the spicy and hot noodle soup that is even better served with kimchi. I can eat ramyeon daily without feeling tired of the taste (Emilda Zulkeflee 2020 MPP ).

– Kimbap (rice wrapped in seaweed paper with various fillings)

It’s easy to eat anywhere and it’s affordable for students like us (Dilrabo Tolipova, 2020 MDP).
