The KDIS Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Forum kicked off the Fall semester with a welcome assembly held on 20th September 2019. The forum was a gathering of all the KDIS students from the ASEAN member states and friends from other nations, for a night of introductions and sharing of culture.
The current representative of the KDIS ASEAN Forum, Samantha Sheane Chico from the Philippines, briefly discussed the purpose, objectives and activities of the Forum since its official launch in Fall 2017. She also introduced the executive committee which includes Ratana Chhor, Cambodia; Mas Ayu Nila Anggraini Octaviana, Indonesia; Souksakhone Keophila, Laos; Abdul Rahman Abdul Ghani, Malaysia; Wai Wai Phyoe, Myanmar; Isabella Angelica Millanes, Philippines; Rattanart Chantawannop and Kamolchanok Reansuwong, Thailand; and Bui Le Hang, Vietnam; and the faculty adviser, Prof. Lisa Lim.
The students from the member states introduced themselves and greeted everyone in their native languages. The students from the non-ASEAN countries came in their national costumes to proudly represent their home countries.
While pizza and chicken were being served, Ms. Nila Octaviana showcased a traditional dance from Indonesia. She was followed by Ms. Heinriette Vienne Villapando who sang a Filipino song. A music video of the Kidmak song whose lyrics were made up of several languages from the ASEAN countries, was shown.
The KDIS ASEAN Forum aims to bring together students from the ASEAN member states within the context of regional integration and cooperation with the following objectives: to discuss pressing issues regarding economic, socio-cultural, and political-security integration in the ASEAN region; to provide multidisciplinary, multicultural insights for the shaping of development policy and to celebrate unity in diversity within the ASEAN community.
For the rest of the Fall semester, the KDIS ASEAN community and friends are looking forward to several ASEAN activities throughout the semester.
